In 1982, the Mitsubishi Pajero appeared as a pioneer of what we now call SUVs, with a station wagon-type body mounted on the chassis of a small pickup truck, the Forte 4WD. At the time, the term SUV was not yet in widespread use and cars were often called RVs (short for recreational vehicles), and the Pajero became extremely popular as a driving force behind the boom. In 1983, Mitsubishi began participating in the Paris-Dakar Rally, which was said to be the toughest rally in the world at the time, in order to promote the Pajero. Starting with a debut win in the first year, the car has continued to win many races since changing the base to the second-generation Pajero in 1991. Since 1997, it has been stipulated that rally cars run by automakers must be based on commercially available cars (previously prototypes that were significantly different from commercially available cars were the norm), and Mitsubishi produced about 2,700 Pajero Evolutions, a rally-based car equipped with suspension, engines, aerodynamic devices, and other features that are advantageous for off-road driving. The Hot Wheels version faithfully reproduces the Pajero Evolution's distinctive features, such as over fenders, front and rear aero bumpers, and an engine hood with large air intakes.
